How To Identify Termites And Their Damage

Subterranean termites are the most common type of termite in Long Island; they are also the most destructive species in existence. There are three different castes of subterranean termites, which include the following:

  • Reproductives: The reproductives exist in three groups; alates, queens, and kings. The alates have black bodies about half an inch long with long white wings; these are swarmer termites. The queen is the biggest termite in the colony and can measure between four to six inches long. The queen is so big that she cannot move well and is totally dependent on the colony to take care of her basic needs. The king is much smaller and usually about an inch long.

  • Workers: This type of termite is only about ¼ of an inch long and has a white-colored body.

  • Soldiers: The soldiers are about the same size and color as the worker termites. However, soldiers usually have brown-colored heads shaped like a rectangle. Their bodies are flatter than any other type of termite in the colony.

Subterranean termites live in large underground colonies. Most subterranean termite colonies have several thousand members. However, there can be as many as two million termites living together.

Factors That Attract Termites To Your Home

Termites are attracted to warm and moist places. If you have leaking pipes or any type of standing water near your home, it could bring swarms of termites to your property. While this might be obvious, termites are also attracted to wood. If you have piles of firewood around your home or old tree branches in your yard, they could attract termites to your property.

The Best Way To Protect Your Home From Termites

Termites can invade your home quickly and cause a lot of damage. To keep these destructive insects away from your house, you can try these tips:

  • Make sure that crawl spaces and other areas around your home have adequate ventilation.

  • Use mulch as sparingly as possible in your yard, and don't put the mulch directly next to your house.

  • Keep stacks of firewood as far away from your home as possible.

  • Make sure that your gutter system is working properly.

  • Check around your home for any leaky pipes or dripping air conditioners.

The best way to keep termites away from your property is to keep the area around your home as dry as possible.
